A healthy grapefruit diet

How would you feel about having to eat 1/2 a grapefruit with every meal for 12 days? That works out at 18 grapefruit! It also seems fairly monotonous. I love fresh fruit and vegetables but I like to be able to pick and choose what I eat. Variety is also important in a balanced diet. I can imagine people who try the grapefruit diet after 12 days never wanting to eat another grapefruit for months. Even trying to eat a grapefruit for breakfast every day would begin to get boring after a while. So how about simply deciding to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables we try to consume on a daily basis. It would be easy to have grapefruit for breakfast once or twice a week. We could eat this in addition to or instead of our regular breakfast. This is one small step to improving our health. This is my issue with going on a diet like the grapefruit diet or atkins diet for example. Going on a diet is simply not sustainable. Instead of dieting and trying to loose weight that way would it not be a better idea to improve the nutritional quality of the food we eat in general? I believe so.

What is a healthy grapefruit diet?

Rather than a 12 day crash diet that may or may not resemble our current eating patterns where we have 1/2 a grapefruit with every meal I think that improving our health step by step, day by day, week by week, month by month and year by year is a much better way to go. Something that we could all do is once a week have grapefruit for breakfast. This is way less extreme than the 12 day grapefruit diet. As grapefruits are low calorie foods, eating two or three for breakfast is a good way to start the day. They provide us with a great source of fiber, vitamin C, hydration and energy for the day ahead. In my eyes this is a much more healthy option than crash dieting.

In addition, eating grapefruit is so easy. Cutting one in half and then using a curved grapefruit knife is one option. As I don’t have a grapefruit knife myself I just get in there with my hands and fingers. Firstly I cut off the tops and bottoms of the grapefruit and then just start to peel the rest of the skin away. This does get quite messy but I find it to be an enjoyable way to eat. Forget the grapefruit diet and try a grapefruit in your diet.
